We documentate here the statement of fusionistas against antisemitism, from june 21. of 2024:

“A proposition rather than a „Nachschlag“ – an attempt to communicate

We are crews, crew members, artists and members of structures in the Fusion circle. This is our criticism of the statement of the Kulturkosmos (Kuko) of 20.05.2024.

Fusion has an enormous appeal. It is characterized by the fact that it is a cosmos that has grown out of left-wing and emancipatory structures, despite not being organized on a grassroots democratic basis.

Our dialog with Kuko is representative of disputes that are also being conducted in other (left wing) projects and structures regarding the ‘conflict in the Middle East’. In many places, we see the existence of projects at risk, also due to the inability to endure contradictions and conduct dialogues respectfully. Therefore we want to share our positions and invite you to relate in the sense of a universal humanist discourse.

Dear Kuko,

In your November 2023 newsletter you mentioned the attack on the Supernova festival, which was not only an elimatory attack on Israeli people but also a deliberate attack aimed at a liberal way of life and thus also an attack on all left-wing and anti-fascist festivals with the following words:

“When the news and later the images of the attack on the Supernova Festival emerged on Saturday, even before the true scale of this barbaric attack was foreseeable and as if the news of the brutal and indiscriminate massacre of civilians was not shocking enough, it left us absolutely speechless and in tears.”

In the same text, you define Israel as the country “that emerged from the history of the Shoah as a safe home for Jews” and you express sorrow for the “1,300 people, the vast majority of them Israelis and Jews, who were killed by the Hamas murder brigades”.

About ‘Red Lines’

Then, in the February newsletter, you formulated two ‘red lines’: “Israel’s non-negotiable right to exist and the glorification or support of Hamas”. This makes sense, because “any criticism of the Israeli government, the occupation of the Palestinian territories after 1967, the violence of Jewish settlers in the West Bank against Palestinians or Israel’s warfare in Gaza can be conducted within these boundaries.”

You could have left it at that.

And yes, criticizing Israel’s right-wing government is necessary, if only to support the emancipatory forces on the ground. It is not necessary though to fall into antisemitic narratives.

There is a lot of talk about Antisemitism in your statements, but no mention how you define it. Understandably, because definitions of antisemitism vary. We will here use the Jerusalem Declaration (JDA) as a working definition, which, unlike the IHRA, does not necessarily understand Israel-related antisemitism as such (Würdemann, 2024). The definition of antisemitism is accordingly: “Denying Jews in the State of Israel the right to live collectively and individually in accordance with the principle of equality.”

In May, you wrote: “A […] central point of criticism was that Israel’s non-negotiable right to exist, as undifferentiated and bold as it was written from our German perspective, de facto excludes the right of a Palestinian state to exist […] therefore, for many Palestinian Fusionists, the recognition of this nationalist Israeli state is problematic and they cannot agree to this, at least as we have demanded. We should respect this.”

In June, you wrote: “We did not question Israel’s right to exist, but demanded respect for a broader perspective, […] in this context, no one can make their own position the extent of what may and may not be said at Fusion. All people who abide by our few rules are welcome at Fusion.”

This is clear: You demand respect for a perspective that questions Israel’s right to exist and want to enforce this respect.

The following text doesn’t refer your ‘Nachschlag’, but describes a typical approach of opponents of the Israeli state:

“Patronizingly, one concedes Israel a ‘right to exist’, but at the same time ensures that this is practically denied by defaming its self-defence as ‘contrary to international law’ and as a ‘war crime’, pillorying the insistence on a Jewish state as a form of ‘apartheid’ and treating the country, the ‘collective Jew of the nations’, like a pariah state, while financially supporting declared enemies of Israel or diplomatically closing them off.” (Markl, February 2023)

This is how you put it: “Many rightly missed a third red line, which names the war in Gaza as genocide and the Israeli occupation policy as apartheid with a clear demarcation against all those who support, negate or trivialize this. Here we have indeed drawn a one-sided line. We ourselves shied away from using the terms ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid’ in the newsletter, but we now see that, despite all the criticism we have articulated, we have shown false consideration for German sensitivities here, which does not do justice to what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank (…) the terms ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid’ that we have used must, in our opinion, be openly discussed.”

‘Apartheid’, ‘genocide’, ‘genocide’ and ‘Zionist settler policy’ are all terms that the BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, or BDS for short), among others, has been using in its propaganda against Israel for many years and before the current war in the Middle East in order to accuse, defame and delegitimize Israel. Since the (criminal) state of Israel has forfeited its legitimacy, it must be destroyed, abolished or even annihilated in favor of Palestinian nationalism.

“[BDS] is characterized by a rationally unjustifiable fixation on Israel, it is characterized by the reproduction of elements of the anti-Semitic worldview and, by delegitimizing the national self-determination of the Jewish people, it effectively worsens the life chances of Jews as Jews.” (Biskamp, 2018)

This can clearly be classified as anti-Semitic, even on the basis of the JDA.

“However, the fact that the campaign as a whole can be described as antisemitic does not mean that all supporters are individually antisemitically motivated or should even be described as antisemitic. The motivations of supporters vary greatly, as does their level of reflection – some are motivated by attitude, others lack reflection on the antisemitic context, while others may simply be ill- informed or naive in their sincere commitment to human rights.” (Biskamp, 2018)

BDS is particularly attractive to people who see themselves as ‘left-wing’ and ‘socially aware’ (Fusion’s target group) and unsurprisingly there have been multipe events on the topic at Fusion in recent years. Although BDS activists could also take to boycotting Turkey, Iran or China aiming ‘to improve the world’, many of them invariably target Israel – and this is no coincidence as they see in Israel the symbol of ‘universal evil’. Its annihilation is a social redemption fantasy whose origin is antisemitism.

“Transnational BDS activism for the human rights of Palestinians is an activism that legitimizes transnational boycott activism against Israel through antisemitic fantasies and one-sided human rights demands for Palestinians, while Israeli views, rights and demands are delegitimized, demonized and silenced behind the demands for Palestinian rights (…) as soon as Israel is overcome as an exceptional enemy of human rights, not only Palestinians could live in peace, freedom and justice, but all people.” (Müller 2020)

About genocide and the cult of guilt

The Jewish part of Israel’s population (or Israel as a Jewish state) is thus credited with crimes that were originally committed against Jews – thereby exonerating the guilty parties and making it easy to identify with movements aiming at the annihilation of Israel.

Rather then ‘German guilt’ which is specific to the German context, in other (specifically national contexts) an unconscious motor could be ‘postcolonial reparation’ (‘Wiedergutwerdung’) instead of ‘German Wiedergutwerdung’ (cf. Geisel, 1984), a ‘free Palestine from postcolonial guilt’. The insistence on and the permanent repetition of criminal superlatives only attributed to Israel works as a vehicle for disguising one’s own schismatical antiseemitic fantasies. Morally legitimized, Israel, which has become guilty, can then be fought ‘by all means necessary’ (in reference to the black civil rights movement) under the guise of ‘anti-zionism’. Hamas can thus be stylized as a ‘resistance movement’ (cf. e.g. J. Butler).

Antisemitism is still often attributed exclusively to the extreme right. The rest of society conveniently points the finger at ‘the Neonazis’ and does not need to concern itself any further with (its own) antisemitism. The right, in turn, scapegoats migrants and Muslims as the only carriers of antisemitic ideas. The problem are always ‘the others’. In their accusations against Israel, left-wing, right-wing and ‘normal’ antisemites alike reveal their proximity to nationalsocialistic/fascist ways of thinking.

Criticism of antisemitism is often discredited by ‘leftists’ as ‘deutsche Staatsräson’ and ‘Schuldkult’ in disregard for the decades-long struggle conducted by parts of the radical left in conjunction with survivors’ associations for the recognition of victims of fascist germany and supporting their demands for reparations while calling out the perpetrators. A process that is more necessary today than ever, as still hardly any narrative is better suited to distorting historical realities than accusing Jews themselves of genocide. Labeling the use of buzzwords like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid’ as indispensable makes you, Kuko, multipliers of the agenda of politically motivated historical revisionists and BDS. You contribute to the normalization of antisemitic positions.

Unfortunately, not enough: as, in your own words, only ‘German sensitivities’ and ‘German perspective’ of all things possible were holding you back from joining the chorus of those who regard Israel as the ‘evil of the world’ you, too consequently want to ‘liberate Palestine from German guilt’. Therewith you put yourself into the bad company of perpetrator-victim-reversalists and those calling for a ‘Schlussstrich’, right and left alike.

Insert: Real effects of BDS

BDS acts according to the motto ‘whoever is not with us is against us’ and labels non-positioning regarding the topic of Israel / Palestine as ‘normalizing’. Even peace initiatives in the region (e.g. ‘Standing Together’) and elsewhere are thus discredited. BDS does not the war to end any more than Hamas and Netanyahu do – it wants to win it. Peace, understanding and advocacy for ‘both sides’ are unacceptable. Through blackmail and bullying, BDS systematically threatens DiY- structures committed to anti-fascism and critical of antisemitism and racism and manages to spread a climate of fear among cultural workers.

Alliances disintegrate, groups become incapacitated: antifascist groups, groups putting up shows and parties as well as cultural venues are on the brink of collapse.

This is a serious setback for the radical left taking into consideration the succcess of the AfD and the sharp rise in antisemitic and racist incitement/violence, as well as the gentrification in the cities. Structures in the rural parts of Germany, especially in eastern Germany are particularly negatively effected. Your statements are ‘not just words’, they have an actual effect (outside the fusion cosmos). You must therefore ask yourselves: What consequences for the (radical) left are you prepared to wager in order to make your unacceptable positions negotiable?

About depoliticization

We take your sense of mission which shows itself through your numerous statements and rebuttals, read by tenthousands, seriously. So we criticize you. But instead of being happy that the left discourse has reflexes still and reacts, and instead of reading our criticism as an act of solidarity, which it is, you solely interpret it as an attack. You react with defense, defiance and avoidance: “our text contains several controversial passages and terms that would require a discursive space that a statement cannot provide”. Fusion actually could be this discourse space, but no, you state: “nobody needs another political battle zone at Fusion where people delegitimize each other or their opinions.” You end the debate instead of taking it on.

You wish ‘that everything can and shall be stated’, ‘freedom of opinion’ should be guaranteed, ‘respect’ should be shown for the liberal ‘anything goes’. The content and consequences of the stated opinions seem irrelevant.What to do though when these ‘expressions of opinions’ contain verbal or symbolic fantasies of the annihilation of Israel? If Hamas’ red triangle of marking its enemies is used? How to interpret ‘from the river to the sea’? Do you mean to protect from and refrain from discrimination – or do you rather enforce ‘free speech’? Waht can Fusionistas convey from and how can they make your statements the basis of their actions? Are all those who want to discuss ‘the making of opinions’ in the light of this not welcome anymore? Or even the new (internal) enemy?

There are plenty of realistic examples that you could take a stance on:

– 99% of the time the slogan ‘from the river to the sea’ propagates the destruction of Israel. This can be seen, among other things, in the depiction of the map that usually accompanies the slogan: not Israel and Palestine are depicted there, but only one Palestinian state.

– On October 7, 360 ravers from the Supernova festival were murdered in the course of the genocidal massacre by Hamas (never mentioned again in any of your statements from November on). Why is there no space to commemorate or to mourn them at Fusion? And shouldn’t we be the first to stand together against the beginnings of politics and ideologies that makes terror like this possible?

– The group ‘Palestine Speaks’ expressed joy about the massacre on October 7 and posted pictures of kite flyers on October 8, no doubt celebrating those who had previously murdered the ravers. They illustrate a text that says ‘all resistance is justified’. Will they also participate at Fusion this year?

Conclusion

It is sad and even scandalous that especially Fusion should’nt be a place for debate and dispute among (leftist) people. Discourse should not be conducted from the top down. Your unwillingness to discuss seems like an authoritarian attempt to impose preconditions and possibly shape the entire (left-wing) political discourse. The boundaries of what can be said are being pushed according to your third red line: respect for those who want to deny Israel’s right to exist. It does not draw a line, but represents a threshold that makes it possible to cross the other lines. You are working on establishing terms that were previously at least contested. You dismiss criticism and antifascist discourse as ‘German sensitivities’, as is usually the case with anti-Semites from all political spectrums. In doing so, you are throwing the discourse back decades and leaving an emancipatory path. Yet so many of us were on a right track with our stance: criticism of antisemitism and criticism of racism are essential and not mutually exclusive!

Despite all the criticism, we see your desire to organize a happy and peaceful festival. In doing so, you try to ‘please everyone’ – an endeavor that, as you should know, rarely succeeds in a charged political discourse. In your statements, you effectively divide your guests and crews into camps and take sides yourselves. In this way, you conjure up political rifts, but then call for them to be avoided at all costs. Neutrality is demanded from parts of the crew, while you want to bullet-proof your positions against any criticism. You postulate ‘zero tolerance’ for discriminatory behavior, but refuse to name what would be considered antisemitic, racist or sexist, for example. This is not a solid guideline for the crew and visitors to follow. In the worst case scenario, this creates a scenario in which the loudest and most brutal gain the upper hand in the discussion. For us, this means a negligent dissolving of solidarity that can put some of us in danger before, during and after the festival. Antisemitism, islamism and racism are real threats that also affect people at Fusion (in crews, as artists, as visitors). Instead of counteracting these threats, you are trivializing and even fueling them with your ‘Nachschläge’. This cannot be the purpose and aim of an emancipatory space!

“Vorschlag statt “Nachschlag” – Ein Versuch der Verständigung

Wir sind Crews, Crew-Mitglieder, Artists und Mitglieder bundesweiter Strukturen aus dem Kreis der Fusion. Die Fusion hat eine enorme Strahlkraft. Sie zeichnet aus, dass sie, wenn auch nicht basisdemokratisch organisiert, ein aus linken und emanzipatorischen Strukturen gewachsener Kosmos ist. Dies ist unsere Kritik am Statement des Kulturkosmos (Kuko) vom 20.05.2024.

Unser Dialog mit dem Kuko steht stellvertretend für Auseinandersetzungen, die im Zuge des ‘Nahostkonfliktes’ auch in anderen Projekten und Strukturen geführt werden. Wir sehen vielerorts die Existenz von Projekten gefährdet und dies liegt auch in der Unfähigkeit, Widersprüche auszuhalten und Dialoge respektvoll zu führen, begründet. Deshalb zeigen wir hier unsere Positionen auf und laden dazu ein, sich im Sinne eines universell humanistischen Diskurses darauf zu beziehen.

Lieber Kulturkosmos,

im November 2023 habt ihr in eurem Newsletter den Angriff auf das Supernova-Festival, der ein gezielter Angriff auf freiheitliche Lebensweise und somit auch ein Angriff auf alle linken und antifaschistischen Festivals war, mit folgenden Worten erwähnt:

“Als am Samstag, noch bevor die wirkliche Dimension dieses barbarischen Angriffs absehbar war und als wären die Nachrichten über das brutale und wahllose massakrieren von Zivilisten nicht schockierend genug, die Nachricht und später die Bilder des Angriffes auf das Supernova-Festival auftauchten, hat uns dies absolut sprachlos und in Tränen zurückgelassen.”

Im selben Text definiert ihr Israel als das Land, “das als sichere Heimstätte für Jüdinnen und Juden aus der Geschichte der Shoah entstanden ist” und drückt Betroffenheit aus für die “1300 Menschen, die allermeisten Israelis und Jüd:innen, die durch die Mordbrigaden der Hamas getötet worden” sind.

Über ‘Rote Linien’

Im Februar-Newsletter formuliert ihr dann zwei ‘rote Linien’: „das nicht verhandelbare Existenzrecht Israels und die Verherrlichung oder Unterstützung der Hamas“. Sinnvoll, denn “innerhalb der so gezogenen Grenzen kann jede Kritik an der israelischen Regierung, der Besatzung der palästinensischen Gebiete nach 1967, der Gewalt von jüdischen Siedlern im Westjordanland gegenüber Palästinensern oder Israels Kriegsführung in Gaza formuliert werden.”

Ihr hättet es dabei belassen können.

Kritik an Israels rechter Regierung zu üben ist notwendig, schon allein, um die emanzipatorischen Kräfte vor Ort zu unterstützen. Nicht notwendig ist es, dabei in antisemitische Narrative zu verfallen.

Von Antisemitismus ist in euren Statements viel die Rede, aber ihr schreibt nicht, wie ihr ihn definiert. Verständlich, denn Antisemitismus-Definitionen gehen auseinander. Wir möchten uns in diesem Text als Arbeitsdefinition an der Jerusalem Declaration (JDA) entlang hangeln, die im Gegensatz zur IHRA israelbezogenen Antisemitismus nicht unbedingt als solchen versteht (vgl. Würdemann, 2024). Antisemitisch ist demnach: “Jüd:innen im Staat Israel das Recht abzusprechen, kollektiv und individuell gemäß dem Gleichheitsgrundsatz zu leben.”

Im Mai schreibt ihr: “Ein […] zentraler Kritikpunkt war, dass das nicht verhandelbare Existenzrecht Israels, so undifferenziert und plakativ, wie es aus unserer Deutschen Perspektive geschrieben wurde, das Existenzrecht eines Palästinensischen Staates defacto ausschließt […] von daher ist für viele palästinensische Fusionist:innen die Anerkennung dieses nationalistischen israelischen Staates problematisch und sie können dies, zumindest so, wie wir es gefordert haben, nicht teilen. Wir sollten dies respektieren.”

Im Juni schreibt ihr: “Wir haben nicht das Existenzrecht Israels infrage gestellt, sondern Respekt für eine weitere Perspektive gefordert, […] niemand kann in diesem Kontext die eigene Position zum Maß dessen machen, was auf der Fusion gesagt werden darf und was nicht. Auf der Fusion sind alle Menschen willkommen, die sich an unsere wenigen Spielregeln halten.”

Klar wird daraus: Ihr fordert Respekt für eine Perspektive, die das Existenzrecht Israels infrage stellt und möchtet diesen Respekt auch durchsetzen.

Folgender Text beschreibt nicht euren ‘Nachschlag’, sondern ein typisches Vorgehen von Gegnern des israelischen Staates:

“Gönnerhaft gesteht man Israel ein ‘Existenzrecht’ zu, sorgt aber gleichzeitig dafür, dass dieses praktisch bestritten wird, indem man dessen Selbstverteidigung als ‘völkerrechtswidrig’ und als ‘Kriegsverbrechen’ diffamiert, das Bestehen auf einem jüdischen Staat als eine Form von ‘Apartheid’ an den Pranger stellt und das Land, den ‘kollektiven Juden der Nationen’ wie einen Pariastaat behandelt, während man deklarierte Feinde Israels finanziell unterstützt oder ihnen diplomatisch die Mauer macht.” (Markl, Februar 2023)

Ihr formuliert entsprechend: “Viele vermissten zu Recht eine dritte rote Linie, die den Krieg in Gaza als Völkermord und die israelische Besatzungspolitik als Apartheit benennt mit einer klaren Abgrenzung gegen all diejenigen, die dies unterstützen, negieren oder verharmlosen. Hier haben wir uns tatsächlich einseitig abgegrenzt. Wir haben uns im Newsletter gescheut, die Begriffe ‘Völkermord’ und ‘Apartheid’ selbst zu verwenden, sehen aber inzwischen, dass wir hier bei aller Kritik, die wir artikuliert haben, falsche Rücksicht auf deutsche Befindlichkeiten genommen haben, die dem, was in Gaza und dem Westjordanland geschieht, nicht gerecht wird (…) die Begriffe ‘Völkermord’ und ‘Apartheid’, die wir verwendet haben, müssen unser Meinung nach offen diskutiert werden.”

‘Apartheid’, ‘Genozid’, ‘Völkermord’ und ‘Zionistische Siedlerpolitik’ sind allesamt Begriffe, die u.a. die BDS-Bewegung (Boykott, Divestment and Sanctions, kurz BDS) im Zuge ihrer Propaganda gegen Israel schon lange Jahre vor dem aktuellen Krieg in Nahost verwendet, um Israel zu beschuldigen, zu diffamieren und zu delegitimieren. Da der (verbrecherische) Staat seine Berechtigung verwirkt hat, muss er zugunsten eines palästinensischen Nationalismus zerstört, abgeschafft oder gar vernichtet werden.

“[BDS] ist durch eine rational nicht begründbare Fixierung auf Israel gekennzeichnet, sie ist durch die Reproduktion von Elementen des antisemitischen Weltbildes geprägt und sie verschlechtert durch die Delegitimierung der nationalen Selbstbestimmung des jüdischen Volkes effektiv die Lebenschancen von Jüd:innen als Jüd:innen.” (Biskamp, 2018)

Das kann man sogar anhand der JDA klar als antisemitisch einordnen.

“Dass die Kampagne in ihrer Gesamtheit als antisemitisch zu bezeichnen ist, heißt jedoch nicht, dass auch alle Unterstützer:innen individuell antisemitisch motiviert sind oder gar als Antisemit:innen bezeichnet werden sollten. Die Motivationslage der Unterstützer:innen variiert ebenso wie ihre Reflektiertheit stark – einige sind Gesinnungstäter:innen, anderen fehlt vor allem die Reflexion des antisemitischen Kontexts, wieder andere mögen in einem aufrichtigen Engagement für Menschenrechte einfach nur schlecht informiert oder naiv sein.” (Biskamp, 2018)

Gerade für als sich ‘links’ und ‘sozial’ verstehende Menschen (die Zielgruppe der Fusion) ist BDS attraktiv und so gab es auch in den letzten Jahren diverse Veranstaltungen zum Thema auf der Fusion. Zwar könnten sich BDS-Aktivist:innen auch gut dem Boykott der Türkei, des Iran oder Chinas als Ziel ihrer ‘Weltverbesserungsbestrebungen’ verschreiben, aber viele nehmen ausnahmslos Israel ins Visier – und das passiert nicht zufällig. Israel steht für sie als Symbol für das ‘universale Böse’. Seine Vernichtung ist eine soziale Erlösungsfantasie, deren Ursprung Antisemitismus ist.

“Der transnationale BDS-Aktivismus für die Menschenrechte der Palästinenser:innen ist ein Aktivismus, der durch antisemitische Fantasien und einseitige Menschenrechtsforderungen für Palästinenser:innen den transnationalen Bokykottaktivismus gegen Israel legitimiert, während israelische Sichtweisen, Rechte und Forderungen delegitimiert, dämonisiert und hinter den Forderungen nach Rechten zum Schweigen gebracht werden (…) sobald Israel als exzeptionalistisches Feindbild der Menschenrechte überwunden werde, könnten nicht nur Palästinenser:innen in Frieden, Freiheit und Gerechtigkeit leben, sondern alle Menschen.” (Müller 2020)

Über Genozid und Schuldkult

Dem jüdischen Bevölkerungsteil Israels (oder Israel als jüdischem Staat) werden also Verbrechen zugeschrieben, die tatsächlich an Jüd:innen begangen wurden – dadurch werden die Schuldigen im Nachhinein entlastet und es fällt leicht, sich mit Bewegungen, die die Vernichtung Israels anstreben, zu identifizieren. Abgesehen von deutscher Schuld könnte in anderen (spezifisch nationalen Kontexten) ‘postkoloniale Wiedergutwerdung’ statt ‘deutscher Wiedergutwerdung’ (vgl. Geisel,1984) ein unbewusster Motor sein – ein ‘free palestine from postcolonial guilt’. Das Bestehen auf den verbrecherischen Superlativen, die nur Israel zugeschrieben werden und ihre permanente Wiederholung ist ein Vehikel, um die eigenen abgespaltenen antisemitischer Fantasien zu verschleiern. Moralisch legitimiert lässt sich dann das schuldig gewordene Israel unter dem Deckmantel des ‘Anti-Zionismus’ bekämpfen, und zwar ‘by all means neccessary’ (in Anlehnung an die schwarze Bürgerrechtsbewegung). Die Hamas lässt sich so als ‘Widerstandsbewegung’ stilisieren (vgl. z.B. J. Butler).

Antisemitismus wird immer noch gern exklusiv den extremen Rechten zugeschrieben. Die breite Gesellschaft zeigt bequem mit dem Finger auf ‘die Neonazis’ und braucht sich nicht weiter mit (ihrem eigenem) Antisemitismus zu beschäftigen. Die Rechten verweisen wiederum auf Migrant:innen und Muslim:a als einzige Träger:innen antisemitischen Gedankenguts. Das Problem sind also ‘die Anderen’. In den Vorwürfen gegen Israel offenbaren linke, rechte und ‘ganz normale’ Antisemit:innen gleichermaßen ihre Nähe zu Denkweisen des Nationalsozialismus.

Antisemitismuskritik wird heute gern von ‘Linken’ als ‘deutsche Staatsräson’ und ‘Schuldkult’ diskreditiert, und das, obwohl sie jahrzehntelang von Teilen der radikalen Linken im Verbund mit z.B. Überlebendenverbänden erstritten wurde. Ein Prozess, der heute nötiger denn je ist, denn kaum eine Erzählung eignet sich besser zur Verkehrung historischer Realitäten als die, Jüd:innen selbst des Genozids zu beschuldigen. Indem ihr, Kuko, die Verwendung der Schlagworte ‘Genozid’ und ‘Apartheid’ als unabdingbar anseht, macht ihr euch zu Multiplikator:innen der Agenda von Geschichtsrevisionist:innen sowie BDS und tragt zu einer Normalisierung antisemitischer Positionen bei.

Damit leider nicht genug: Das Einzige, was euch laut eigenen Worten abhielt, in den Chor derjenigen einzustimmen, die in Israel das ‘Übel der Welt’ sehen, waren ausgerechnet ‘deutsche Befindlichkeiten’ und ‘deutsche Perspektive’ und offensichtlich soll damit jetzt Schluss sein. Auch ihr möchtet nun ‘Palästina von deutschem Schuldkult befreien’. Damit befindet ihr euch in schlimmster Gesellschaft von Täter-Opfer-Umkehrenden und Schlusstrich-Fordernden, rechten wie linken gleichermaßen.

Einschub: Reale Auswirkungen von BDS

BDS agiert nach dem Motto ‘Wer nicht für uns ist, ist gegen uns!’ und labelt Nicht-Positionierung im Bezug auf Israel oder gar Friedensinitiativen in der Region und anderswo als ‘normalisierend’ (bspw. ‘Standing Together’) – sie will den Krieg genau sowenig wie die Hamas und Netanjahu beendet sehen – sie will ihn gewinnen. Frieden, Verständnis und ein Eintreten für ‘beide Seiten’ findet sie inakzeptabel. Systematisch bedroht BDS durch Erpressung und Mobbing DiY-Strukturen, die sich antifaschistisch, antisemitismuskritisch und antirassistisch engagieren und schafft es, ein Klima der Angst unter Kulturschaffenden zu verbreiten. Bündnisse zerfallen, Gruppen werden handlungsunfähig, Antifa- und Konzertgruppen sowie kulturelle Orte stehen vor dem Aus.

Für radikale Linke ist das angesichts von AfD-Erfolgen und krassem Anstieg antisemitischer und rassistischer Hetze/Gewalt ein schwerer Rückschlag, dazu kommt in den Städten Gentrifizierung. Besonders starkt betroffen sind Strukturen in der Provinz und im Osten Deutschlands. Eure ‘Nachschläge’ sind eben ‘nicht nur Worte’, sie wirken auch außerhalb des Fusion-Kosmos. Ihr müsst euch deshalb die Frage stellen lassen: Welche Konsequenzen für die radikale Linke seid ihr bereit in Kauf zu nehmen, um untragbare Positionen verhandelbar zu machen?

Über Entpolitisierung

Euer Sendungsbewusstsein durch Statements und ‘Nachschläge’, die Zehntausende lesen können, nehmen wir ernst, daher kritisieren wir euch. Aber statt euch zu freuen, dass der linke Diskurs noch Reflexe hat und auf euch reagiert und statt Kritik als solidarischen Akt zu lesen, wertet ihr sie als Angriff. Ihr reagiert mit Abwehr, Trotz und Vermeidung: “unser Text enthält mehrere streitbare Passagen und Begriffe, die einen Diskursraum bräuchten, den ein Statement nicht leisten kann”. Nun könnte die Fusion dieser Diskursraum sein, aber nein, ihr erklärt: “niemand braucht eine weitere politische Kampfzone auf der Fusion, in der Menschen sich oder ihre Meinungen gegenseitig delegitimieren.” Ihr beendet die Debatte im Ansatz, statt sie zu führen.

“Niemand kann […] die eigene Position zum Maß dessen machen, was auf der Fusion gesagt werden darf und was nicht. Auf der Fusion sind alle Menschen willkommen, die sich an unsere wenigen Spielregeln halten.” (Kuko)

Ihr wünscht euch, ‘dass alles gesagt werden darf’, ‘Meinungsfreiheit’ soll garantiert werden, ‘Respekt’ sollen wir haben vor dem liberalen ‘Anything goes’. Inhalte und Folgen dieses Meinungsbreis scheinen irrelevant. Was tun aber, wenn diese Meinungsäußerungen verbale oder symbolhaften Vernichtungsphantasien Israels gegenüber beinhalten? Das rote Dreieck der Feindmarkierungen der Hamas verwendet wird? Was ist unter dem Slogan ‘from the river to the sea’ zu verstehen? Respekt und Schutz vor Diskriminierung – oder ‘freie Rede’? Was sollen Fusionistas aus euren Statements ableiten und zur Grundlage ihres Handelns machen? Sind alle, die angesichts dessen über ‘Meinungsmache’ diskutieren wollen, nicht erwünscht? Oder gar schon der neue (innere) Feind?

Konkrete Beispiele, zu denen man eine Haltung haben könnte, gibt es genug:

– Der Slogan ‘from the river to the sea’ propagiert zu 99% die Vernichtung Israels. Das lässt sich u.a. an der Darstellung der Landkarte erkennen, die die Parole meist begleitet: nicht Israel und Palästina sind dort abgebildet, sondern allein ein palästinesischer Staat.

– Am 7.10. wurden im Zuge des genozidalen Massakers der Hamas allein 360 Raver:innen des Supernova-Festival ermordet (ab November in keinem eurer Texte erwähnt). Warum ist auf der Fusion dafür kein Platz? Sollten wir nicht die Ersten sein, die sich zusammen stellen gegen Anfänge, die so etwas möglich machen?

– Die Gruppe ‘Palästina Spricht’ bekundete gleich am 7.10. Freude über das Massaker und postete am 8.10. Bilder von Kitefliegern, die zweifellos diejenigen feiern, die zuvor die Raver:innen ermordet haben. Sie illustrieren damit einen Text, der ‘jeder Widerstand ist gerechtfertigt’ zum Inhalt hat.

Fazit

Dass ausgerechnet die Fusion kein Ort für Debatte und Streit unter Linken sein soll, ist traurig bis skandalös. Diskurs sollte nicht von oben nach unten geführt werden. Euer Unwille zur Diskussion wirkt wie ein autoritärer Versuch, Bedingungen durchzusetzen und ggf. den gesamten linken Diskurs zu prägen. Die Grenzen des Sagbaren werden gemäß eurer dritten roten Linie verschoben: Respekt für die, die Israel das Existenzrecht absprechen möchten. Sie zieht keine Grenze, sondern stellt eine Schwelle dar, die es ermöglicht, die anderen Linien zu überschreiten. Ihr arbeitet daran, Begriffe zulässig zu machen, die vorher zumindest umkämpft waren. Kritik daran tut ihr als ‘deutsche Befindlichkeiten’ ab, wie man es sonst von Antisemit:innen aus allen politischen Spektren kennt. Ihr werft damit den Diskurs um Jahrzente zurück und verlasst dabei den Pfad des Emanzipatorischen. Dabei waren doch viele von uns auf einem guten Weg mit der Haltung: Antisemitismuskritik und Rassismuskritik sind essenziell und schließen sich nicht gegenseitig aus!

Wir sehen bei aller Kritik euren Willen, eine fröhliche und friedliche Fusion auszurichten. Dabei versucht ihr es ‘allen Recht zu machen’ – ein Unterfangen, das, wie ihr wissen müsstet, in aufgeladenen politischen Diskursen selten gelingt. In euren Statements teilt ihr faktisch eure Gäst:innen und Crews in Lager und ergreift auch selbst Partei. Politische Zerwürfnisse beschwört ihr so erst herbei, fordert dann aber ein, diese unbedingt zu vermeiden. Teilen der Crew wird Neutralität abverlangt, während ihr eure Positionen gegen jegliche Kritik abdichten wollt. Ihr postuliert ‘Zero Tolerance’ für diskrimierendes Verhalten, weigert euch aber zu benennen, was als bspw. antisemitisch, rassistisch oder sexistisch zu werten wäre. Das ist kein solider Leitfaden, an dem sich Crew und Besucher:innen orientieren können. Im schlimmsten Fall wird dadurch ein Szenario geschaffen, bei dem die Lautesten und Brutalsten die Oberhand über die Diskussion erlangen. Für uns bedeutet das eine fahrlässige Entsolidarisierung, die uns vor, während und nach dem Festival konkret in Gefahr bringen kann. Antisemitismus, Islamismus und Rassismus sind reale Bedrohungen, von denen auch auf der Fusion Menschen (in Crews, als Artists, als Besucher:innen) betroffen sind. Wir sind der Meinung, dass ihr diese Bedrohungen, statt ihnen entgegenzuwirken, durch eure ‘Nachschläge’ verharmlost, ja sogar befeuert. Das kann nicht Sinn und Ziel eines emanzipatorischen Raumes sein!

Text der Fusionistas gegen Antisemitismus vom 07.06.2024:

“Einleitung für Externe

Wir, Crews, Crewmitglieder, Artists und Mitglieder bundesweiter Strukturen aus dem Kreis der Fusion, finden es wichtig, dass unsere nachfolgende Stellungnahme an die Öffentlichkeit kommt:

​​​​​​​Die Fusion hat als eines der grossen deutschen Festivals eine enorme Strahlkraft. Das Besondere an der Fusion ist, dass sie zwar nicht basisdemokratisch organisiert, aber dennoch ein aus linken, emanzipatorischen Strukturen lang gewachsenes Projekt ist. Wir halten den politischen Diskurs, der unserer Kritik am “Nachschlag” der Fusion zugrundeliegt, für enorm wichtig. Es ist wichtig, die bysen Diskurs mit Genauigkeit zu führen und nicht mit unreflektierten Schlagworten. Uns ist daran glegen, dass außer der Position des Kulturkosmos auch andere Positionen öffentlich wahrnehmbar sind: nicht nur um aufzuzeigen, dass es unterschiedliche Positionen gibt, sondern auch um Leuten die Möglichkeit zu geben, sich darauf zu beziehen. Wir sind interessiert an einem konstruktiven Dialog mit dem Kulturkosmos, der auch stellvertretend steht für Auseinandersetzungen, die in anderen Projekten und Strukturen geführt werden. Unser Anliegen ist der Wunsch nach respektvollem Dialog und Aushaltbarkeit von Widersprüchen – jedoch zwischen ‘roten Linien’.

Vorschlag statt “Nachschlag” – Ein Versuch der Verständigung

Lieber Kuko, wir sind Crews, Crewmitglieder, Artists und Mitglieder bundesweiter Strukturen, die die Fusion (auch) in diesem Jahr mitgestalten woll(t)en und euren “Nachschlag” zum Februar Newsletter nicht ertragen!

Die realen Bedrohungen, die von Antisemitismus und Islamismus ausgehen und von denen auch am Festival beteiligte Menschen betroffen sind (in Crews, als Artists, als Besucher:innen), negiert ihr nicht nur, nein, ihr befeuert sie noch.

Mit eurem Zusatz vom 05.06. habt ihr erneut bewiesen, dass euch unsere bereits im Vorfeld durch Mails und in persönlichen Gesprächen zugetragene politische und menschliche Verzweiflung und unsere Kritik angesichts der Lage nicht genug interessiert, um euer Statement vom Netz zu nehmen.

Ihr habt im November Newsletter den Angriff auf das Supernova-Festival, der ein gezielter Angriff auf freiheitliche Lebensweise und weltweite Festivalkultur war, ein Angriff auch gegenüber allen linken und antifaschistischen Festivals, mit folgenden Worten erwähnt: “(…) Als am Samstag, noch bevor die wirkliche Dimension dieses barbarischen Angriffs absehbar war und als wären die Nachrichten über das brutale und wahllose massakrieren von Zivilisten nicht schockierend genug, die Nachricht und später die Bilder des Angriffes auf das Supernova-Festival auftauchten, hat uns dies absolut sprachlos und in Tränen zurückgelassen (…).”

Im selben Newsletter definiert ihr Israel als das Land, “das als sichere Heimstätte für Jüdinnen und Juden aus der Geschichte der Shoah entstanden ist” und drückt Betroffenheit aus über die “1300 Menschen, die allermeisten Israelis und Jüd:innen, durch die Mordbrigaden der Hamas getötet worden (…)” sind – ein genozidales Massaker gegenüber jüdischen Lebens.

Die Fusion ist das erste große politische Festival in Deutschland seit dem Massaker auf dem Supernova. Wir hätten dieses Jahr als Fusion den Opfern gedenken können und sollen. Stattdessen negiert und revidiert ihr eure Aussagen mit eurem “Nachschlag”.

Wir sind fassungslos, dass ihr kurz vor dem Festival, wenn kaum noch eine Reaktion unsererseits möglich ist, ein Statement veröffentlicht habt, das dem gerade noch konsensfähigen Statement vom Februar (auch dieses stieß vielen inhaltlich auf und wurde als problematisch empfunden) widerspricht, bzw. die dort formulierten ‘roten Linien’ aushebelt.

Wir zitieren hier an dieser Stelle Ulrich Gutmair zu “Roten Linien” (taz vom 31.05.2024) und verlinken nachfolgend noch Kritiken, Einordnungen und Analysen aus unseren Reihen zum Inhalt des “Nachschlag”:

“(…) Im Februar hatte das Festival zwei rote Linien formuliert, „das nicht verhandelbare Existenzrecht Israels und die Verherrlichung oder Unterstützung der Hamas“. Das war richtig, denn innerhalb der so gezogenen Grenzen kann jede Kritik an der israelischen Regierung, der Besatzung der palästinensischen Gebiete nach 1967, der Gewalt von jüdischen Siedlern im Westjordanland gegenüber Palästinensern oder Israels Kriegsführung in Gaza formuliert werden.(…)”

Über Antisemitismus und ‘Rote Linien’:

‘Apartheid’, ‘Genozid’, ‘Völkermord’, ‘Zionistische Siedlerpolitik’ sind Begriffe, die BDS lange Jahre vor dem aktuellen Krieg in Nahost verwendet, um Israel zu delegitimieren, aktuell jedoch vor allem neue Bedrohungen für DIY Strukturen schafft und ein allgemeines Klima der Angst unter Kulturschaffenden erzeugt. BDS agiert nach dem Motto ‘Wer nicht für uns ist, ist gegen uns!’ und labelt Nicht-Positionierung im Bezug auf Israel oder gar Friedensinitiativen in der Region und anderswo als ‘normalisierend’. Indem ihr diese Begriffe unhinterfragt reproduziert, macht ihr euch zu Multiplikator:innen der Agenda des BDS.

Die Folgen eures Statements sind für die Fusion absehbar unverantwortlich und auf mehreren Ebenen desaströs, wie wir im Folgenden aufzeigen:

Mit dem “Nachschlag” legt ihr ein sehr fragwürdiges Verhalten als alle Crews übergreifende Festivalleitung an den Tag und zeigt eure unsolidarische, destruktive und fahrlässige Haltung auf – politisch wie auch zwischenmenschlich.

Ihr greift Crews, Artists und Besucher:innen der Fusion an und damit auch die dahinterstehenden, unabhängigen und emanzipatorischen Strukturen bundesweit – und zeigt euch ignorant gegenüber ihren akuten Bedrohungen. Ihr solltet selbst am Besten wissen, dass ein beiderseitiges Abhängigkeitsverhältnis besteht, denn während diese Strukturen der Fusion ihre Infrastruktur zur Verfügung stellen, hängen sie oft finanziell bis in die abgehängtesten Regionen hinein von den Einnahmen auf der Fusion ab.

Durch den leichtfertigen und unprofessionellen “Nachschlag” zwingt ihr den Crews eine Auseinandersetzung auf, die eine unnötige Befeuerung des Konflikts zur Folge hat und, wenige Wochen vor der Fusion, viel zusätzliche Arbeit schafft und Gefahren birgt!

BUNDESWEIT

Ihr fallt Menschen, die sich tagtäglich in ihren Strukturen für universelle Menschenrechte engagieren (u.a. gegen Antisemitismus, Rassismus, Antifeminismus) in den Rücken.

Euch ist bekannt, wie sehr die politischen Grabenkämpfe, die das Thema ‘Nahost’ betreffen, diese Strukturen gefährden und bedrohen – lange schon vor dem 7.10. und seitdem noch viel mehr.

Euer “Nachschlag” löst bundesweit in emanzipatorischen Zusammenhängen Folgendes aus:

viele fühlen sich unwohl, dieses in ihrer Struktur zu thematisieren und das nicht von ungefähr

sie haben Angst, dass ihre Struktur daran zerbricht

vielerorts ist davon auszugehen, dass dieser Konflikt bereits läuft und für (weitere) interne Spannungen sorgt(e) und damit das Fass womöglich endgültig zum Überlaufen gebracht würde

vielen Projekten geht es finanziell schlecht, weshalb sie wirklich von der Fusion abhängig sind, es treffen also politische Überzeugungen auf existenzielle Geldnöte

Hier ein paar O-Töne von besorgten Crewmitgliedern:

Zitat – @a: “Es ist sehr verwunderlich, warum ein linkes Festival in einer Krisensituation nicht einfach das macht, worin es Expertise hat: Einen Ort für Diskussion und Auseinandersetzung ermöglichen, selbst Geld zur Unterstützung von linken / grassroots Inis (und des verdammt nochmal masssakrierten Supernova-Festivals) in die Hand nehmen bzw. Spenden ankündigen und dazu aufrufen, diese Inis zu unterstützen. Stattdessen dürfen wir und wer weiß wie viele Empfänger*innen live der persönlichen und ehrlich gesagt auch ziemlich peinlich schieflaufenden Auseinandersetzung mit dem Nahostkonflikt beiwohnen. Das ist politisch falsch und auch einfach extrem unprofessionell.”

Zitat – @b: “Das Statement ist (…) im Ton sehr scharfmacherisch (…) zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem bereits (wieder) linke Projekte von irgendwelchen freifreidrehenden Linken angegangen und bedroht werden (z.B. Scharni, Rote Flora) und in denen Antisemitismus auch in linken Räumen etwas Akzeptables zu werden scheint (“Gegen Antisemitismus”-Sticker, Plakate, etc. werden mit einer erschreckenden Selbstverständlichkeit abgekratzt, übermalt etc, Davidsterne werden auf Stickern rausgekratzt, “Fuck Israel / Zionismus” Tags tauchen permanent auf uvm.). Mit dem Statement hat man sich nicht nur vom Versuch der Fusion verabschiedet, ein halbwegs neutraler Ground sein zu wollen. (…) Mehr noch gibt er dieser feindlichen Stimmung und diesem mit Ressentiments geladenen Aktionismus sogar noch die Berechtigung, indem er Israel Völkermord und Apartheid unterstellt (…). Wenn ich mir überlege, wie viele nur peripher politische Fusion Besucher:innen ein derartiges Statement damit zu einer Anti-Israel Position bewegt… Diese Strahlkraft für Menschen, die nicht organisiert sind, sich aber an so großen linken Leuchtturm-Projekten wie der Fusion orientieren, ist meiner Meinung nach enorm. Und die Leute hinter dem Statement haben sich ohne Konsens dieses mächtigen ‘Vehikels’ bedient (…)“

Zitat – @c: „(…)Wir sind wütend, dass es soweit kommen musste. Die Fusion ist seit Jahren für Linke Projekte, grade in Ostdeutschland, ein Ort für Vernetzung & Miteinander, aber auch eine wichtige Geldquelle. Dabei wurden politisch die letzten Jahre auch immer Kompromisse gemacht um gemeinsam die Fusion stemmen zu können. Dieser “Nachschlag” jedoch geht für uns einfach zu weit.(…)“

Der v.a. finanzielle Druck für nicht institutionell geförderte Strukturen z.B. kleinere Clubs, Konzertorte, AZs und Vereine ist in den letzten Jahren ohnehin schon ins Unermessliche gestiegen. Hinzukommend wird ihre Arbeit erschwert durch Folgendes:

Ihr verstärkt bestehende Konflikte und potenziert sie durch euer leichtsinniges und unverantwortliches Handeln. Ihr schafft eine Situation, in der sich linke selbstorganisierte Sehnsuchtsorte und Strukturen aus der ganzen Bundesrepublik sich die Frage stellen, ob sie ihren Selbsterhalt vor ihre politische Überzeugung stellen – und wir wissen von einigen, die fernbleiben möchten oder ihre Arbeit niederlegen werden.

AUF DER FUSION

Geradezu halsbrecherisch und fahrlässig mutet es daher an, dass ihr dies Crews als infrastrukturelles Rückgrat in solch wichtigen Fragen übergeht und die Fusion damit gefährdet.

Ihr holt all diese Konflikte auf den Platz: Statt die Fusion zu einem Ort der Möglichkeit von Dialog oder gar Versöhnlichkeit zu machen, zwingt ihr allen Beteiligten den Konflikt auf.

Fazit

Wir sind sauer und enttäuscht über den autoritären Move, so kurz vor dem Festival einen mühsam erarbeiteten Kompromiss über Bord zu werfen, sauer über die rhetorische Enthemmung, sauer über die eindimensionale Bewertung der Lage. Die mit dem “Nachschlag” vorgenommene Entsolidarisierung mit der israelischen Zivilbevölkerung (insbesondere der Protestbewegungen) und Jüdinnen:Juden weltweit ist für uns genauso wenig hinnehmbar wie die mit ihr verbundenen Zugeständnisse an reaktionäre und antisemitische Gruppen wie “Palästina spricht”, was faktisch einem Schulterschluss mit islamistischen Kräften gleichkommt. Nichts an euerm Handeln unterstützt jedoch die Menschen in Gaza oder einen Friedensprozess in der Region.

Wir fordern euch auf, euch unmissverständlich zu den im Februar gezogen roten Linien und damit zum besonderen Existenzrecht Israels zu bekennen. Das heißt konsequenterweise: der “Nachschlag” muss zurückgezogen werden!

Neben dem inhaltlichen Totalausfall muss auch auf der organisatorischen Ebene etwas geschehen. Wir fühlen uns von der Art der Veröffentlichung übergangen, daran ändert auch die von euch selbst am 05.06. ausgesprochene nachgeschobene “Entschuldigung” für euren Machtmissbrauch, ohne jedoch etwas an diesem zu ändern, nichts. Ein Vorgang, der aufgearbeitet werden muss!

Wir schätzen die Fusion gerade als einen Ort, an dem unterschiedliche, auch zerstrittene Gruppen und Strömungen, zusammenkommen und auf Basis eines emanzipatorischen Grundkonsenses zusammenarbeiten können. Ohne eine große Offenheit für Uneindeutigkeiten und Differenzen ist so ein Projekt zum Scheitern verurteilt. Klar müssen da auch unbequeme Kompromisse gefunden werden, mit denen niemand so recht zufrieden ist. Universelle Solidarität (inklusive Empathie mit Israelis und Jüdinnen:Juden weltweit), ein unmissverständliches Bekenntnis zum Existenzrecht Israels sowie eine konsequente Haltung gegen Antisemitismus in allen seinen Erscheinungsformen ist für uns aber keine Frage von deutschen (sic!) oder anderen “Befindlichkeiten”, sondern Voraussetzung jeder emanzipatorischen Politik. Und trotz aller Enttäuschungen hängen wir immer noch an der Fusion und wollen dem Projekt ungern den Rücken kehren und damit unemanzipatorischen Kräften den Raum überlassen. Gern wollen wir diesen Raum auch nächstes Jahr wieder mitgestalten und mit unserer Arbeit unterstützen. Das können wir aber nur, wenn der für uns unzumutbare “Nachschlag” zurückgezogen und die autoritäre Entstehung desselben aufgearbeitet wird.

Wo geht die Reise hin, wenn ihr das Statement nicht runternehmt?

Von eurer Reaktion auf unsere Forderung hängt viel ab. Das Interesse an diesem Konflikt zeigt, dass es sich um keinen schnöden Grabenkampf handelt. Für viele Leute hat eure Reaktion große Bedeutung.

Sie werden ihre individuellen Entscheidungen davon abhängig machen.

Wir wünschen uns von ganzem Herzen eine friedliche Fusion, in der Dialoge geführt werden können und Widersprüche ausgehalten werden, ohne in antisemitische, rassistische, antimuslimische, antiarabische, antiisraelische, antipalästinensische oder andere ideologisch motivierte Diskriminierungen zu verfallen.”

Statement text of the fusionistas against antisemitism from june the 7. of 2024:

“Introduction for external readers

We, crews, crew members, artists and members of the nationwide structures that make up the fusion circle, feel it is it important that our following statement is made public:

As one of the major German festivals, Fusion has enormous appeal. The unique aspect of Fusion is that, while it is not organised on a grassroots democratic basis, it is still a project that has evolved over a long period from left-wing, emancipatory structures. We consider the political discourse, on which our criticism of the “Nachschlag” of Fusion is based, to be extremely important. It is essential to conduct this discourse with precision and not with unreflective slogans. It is important to us that other positions besides that of Kulturkosmos are publicly visible: not only to show that there are differing positions, but also to give people the opportunity to relate to them. We are interested in a constructive dialogue with Kulturkosmos, which can be seen as representative of disputes that take place in other projects and structures. Our concern is the desire for respectful dialogue and the ability to tolerate contradictions – but within ‘red lines’.

Proposal instead of “Nachschlag” – an attempt at understanding

Dear Kuko, we are crews, crew members, artists and members of nationwide structures who want to help shape Fusion (also) this year and can’t stand your “Nachschlag” to the February newsletter!

You are not only negating the real threats posed by antisemitism and Islamism, which also affect people involved in the festival (as crews, as artists, or visitors), you are fuelling them.

With your addition of the “Nachschlag” from the 5th June you have once again proven that you are not concerned enough by our political and human despair, nor by our criticism of the current situation, which has been voiced in many emails and personal conversations, to retract your statement.

In the November newsletter, you mentioned the attack on the Supernova festival, which was a targeted attack on the liberal way of life and worldwide festival culture, an attack targeted also at any left-wing and anti-fascist festivals, using the following words: “(….) When on Saturday, even before the real extent of this barbaric attack was foreseeable, and as if those news about the brutal and indiscriminate massacre of civilians was not shocking enough, the news and the pictures of the attack on the Supernova festival emerged, it left us absolutely speechless and in tears (…).”

In the same newsletter, you defined Israel as the country “that emerged from the history of the Shoah as a safe haven for Jews” and expressed shock at the “1300 people, the vast majority of them Israelis and Jews, killed by Hamas murder brigades (…)” – a genocidal massacre of Jewish life.

Fusion is the first major political festival in Germany since the massacre at Supernova. As Fusion, we could and should have commemorated the victims this year. Instead, you negate and revise your earlier statements with your “Nachschlag”.

We are stunned that you have published a statement so briefly before the festival, that it is barely possible for us to react, which contradicts your statement from February (which was also perceived as problematic by many and only just reached consensus at the time), and undermines the ‘red lines’ defined there.

Here we quote Ulrich Gutmair on “Red Lines” (taz of May 31, 2024) and refer below to criticisms, classifications and analyses from our ranks on the content of the “Nachschlag”:

“(…) In February, the festival had formulated two red lines, “the non-negotiable right of Israel to exist and the glorification or support of Hamas”. This was correct, because any criticism of the Israeli government, the occupation of the Palestinian territories after 1967, the violence of Jewish settlers in the West Bank towards Palestinians or Israel’s warfare in Gaza can be formulated within these boundaries…”

On antisemitism and ‘red lines’:

‘Apartheid’, ‘genocide’, ‘Zionist settler policy’ are terms that BDS used long before the current war in the

Middle East in order to delegitimise Israel. These terms nowadays mainly create new threats to DIY structures and a general climate of fear among cultural workers. BDS acts according to the motto ‘Whoever is not with us, is against us’ and labels a refusal to take sides in relation to Israel and even peace initiatives in the region and elsewhere as ‘normalising’ of the situation. By reproducing these terms without further reflection, you turn yourselves into multipliers of the BDS agenda.

We include here some differentiated analyses and observations from our ranks that deal in detail with the unacceptable content of the “Nachschlag”.

As we describe below, the consequences of your statement are foreseeably irresponsible for Fusion as well as disastrous on several levels:

With the “Nachschlag” you display questionable behaviour as the festival management across all crews and show your lack of solidarity as well as a destructive and negligent attitude – politically as well as interpersonally.

You are attacking crews, artists and visitors of Fusion and thus also the independent and emancipatory structures behind it that exist nationwide – and are showing your ignorance towards their acute concerns. You should know better than anyone that there is a relationship of mutual dependency, because while these structures provide Fusion with their infrastructure, they often depend on Fusion’s income financially, even in the most remote regions.

With the thoughtless and unprofessional “Nachschlag”, you are forcing the crews into a dispute that unnecessarily fuels the conflict and, just a few weeks before Fusion, creates a lot of additional work and risks!

Nationwide

You are stabbing people in the back who are committed to universal human rights in their structures on a daily basis (e.g. against antisemitism, racism, anti-feminism).

You are aware of the extent to which the deep political divisions surrounding the ‘Middle East conflict’ are endangering and threatening these structures – long before the 7th October, but even more so since then.

Your “Nachschlag” triggers the following in emancipatory contexts throughout Germany:

 Many feel uncomfortable addressing the topic in their structures, and this is not by chance

 They are afraid that their projects will collapse as a result of them addressing the topic

 In many places, it can be assumed that this conflict is already underway and is causing internal tensions, to which your “Nachschlag” may well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back

 Many projects are doing badly financially, which is why they are crucially dependent on Fusion, so political convictions are met with existential financial hardship

Quote – @a: “It’s very surprising why a left-wing festival in a crisis situation doesn’t simply do what it has expertise in: Providing a place for discussion and debate, supporting left-wing / grassroots initiatives financially (including the fucking massacred Supernova festival) or announcing donations and calling for support for these initiatives. Instead, we and who knows how many recipients are witnessing Kulturkosmos’ personal and, to be honest, rather embarrassingly lopsided confrontation with the ‘Middle East conflict’ in real time. This is politically wrong and also simply extremely unprofessional.”

Quote – @b: “The statement is (…) very harsh in tone (…) at a time when left-wing projects are already being attacked and threatened (again) by some erratic leftists (e.g. Scharni, Rote Flora) and in which antisemitism seems to be becoming something acceptable even in left-wing spaces (“Against antisemitism” stickers, posters, etc. are being scratched off, painted over, etc. with a frightening matter- of-factness, Stars of David are being scratched out of stickers, “Fuck Israel / Zionism” tags are appearing everywhere, etc.). The statement is not just a departure from Fusion’s attempt to provide something resembling neutral ground. (…) What’s more, it even justifies this hostile mood and this actionism charged with resentment, by accusing Israel of genocide and apartheid (…). When I think about how many only peripherally politically organised Fusion visitors will be moved to an anti-Israel position by such a statement… In my opinion, this appeal for people who are not politically organised but are oriented towards such large left-wing lighthouse projects as Fusion, is enormous. On top of that the people behind the statement have used this powerful ‘vehicle’ without consensus (…)”

Quote – @c: “(…) We are angry that it had to come to this. For years, the merger has been a place for networking and togetherness for left-wing projects, especially in East Germany, but also an important source of money. In recent years, compromises have always been made politically in order to be able to manage Fusion together. However, this “Nachschlag” simply went too far for us (…)”

The financial pressure on non-institutionally funded structures and project, e.g. smaller clubs, concert venues, AZs and associations, has already increased immeasurably in recent years. In addition, their work is rendered more difficult by the following:

 (Re)strengthened Nazis and the AfD party pose a real threat

 The pressure to position ourselves in this conflict, as well as overload due to BDS boycott calls

have a massive impact on day-to-day business

 Islamism and antisemitism are real threats

You are intensifying existing conflicts and increasing them through your reckless and irresponsible actions. You are creating a situation in which left-wing, grassroots places of longing and structures from all over Germany are asking themselves whether they should prioritise self-preservation over their political convictions – and we know of a few who want to stay away or will resign.

AT FUSION

It therefore seems downright reckless and negligent that you are bypassing these crews as the infrastructural backbone in such important matters and are thus jeopardising Fusion.

You are bringing all these conflicts onto the pitch: instead of making Fusion a place where dialogue or even reconciliation is possible, you are forcing the conflict on everyone involved.

 Crew

 Since the topic of the “Middle East conflict” and the content of the “Nachschlag” inevitably have an impact on group dynamics, e.g. inevitably triggering new conflicts and possibly reigniting old ones, it is the “elephant in the room” for many crews, but addressing it must be avoided in order to remain capable of acting. This creates enormous psychological pressure.

This particularly concerns your solidarity with people and groups who deny Israel’s right to exist, including the adoption of propaganda terms such as “genocide” and “apartheid”. There are many good reasons and opportunities to criticise the Israeli government, as you did in your February newsletter. However, by speaking of “German sensitivities” (aka ‘a cult of guilt’) and stating that an ominous “political mainstream […] dictates the boundaries of debate” (aka ‘censorship of opinion’, ‘Lügenpresse’…), the May statement rhetorically mingles with the worst of political company. Quote – @f: “(…) I am forced to “accept” the statement because I – as a booker, for example – am a mouthpiece of “Fusion” for a small stage. I have to “clean up” this bullshit level 3,000 for my small space, put it into perspective, and discuss it with people who are quite rightly annoyed… and I may have a diametrically opposed opinion (…) I’m talking first of all about harshly invasive behaviour that forces me (and crew members) to adhere to an attitude which I am then also supposed to represent to others. That imposes a considerable amount of additional communication, awareness and care work on me (…)”

Quote – @g: ” (…) Not to use Fusion as a political combat zone – the Palestine-solidarity antisemites will do exactly that, especially after the “Nachschlag”. So, I have the choice between staying home or being part of Fusion (…)

Conclusion

We are angry and disappointed about the authoritarian move to throw a hard-won compromise overboard so shortly before the festival, angry about the complete lack of rhetorical restraint, angry about the one-dimensional assessment of the situation. The desolidarisation with the Israeli civilian population (particularly the protest movements) and Jews around the world that the “Nachschlag”

represents is just as unacceptable to us as are the associated concessions to reactionary and antisemitic groups such as “Palästina Spricht”, which effectively amounts to closing ranks with Islamist forces. However, none of your actions support the people in Gaza or a peace process in the region.

We call on you to commit yourselves unequivocally to the red lines drawn in February and thus to Israel’s special right to exist. Consequently, this means: the “Nachschlag” must be withdrawn!

In addition to the total failure in terms of content, something must also be done at the organisational level. We feel that we have been ignored by the way you published the “Nachschlag”. The subsequent “apology” for your abuse of power which you issued on the 5th June, without doing anything about this abuse of power, does nothing to change it. This process must be addressed properly!

We value Fusion precisely as a place where different groups and political currents, even those at odds with one another, can come together and work together on the basis of a fundamental emancipatory consensus. Without great openness to ambiguity and differences, this kind of project is doomed to fail. Of course, uncomfortable compromises that no one is entirely happy with have to be found. Universal solidarity (including empathy with Israelis and Jews worldwide), an unequivocal commitment to Israel’s right to exist and a consistent stance against antisemitism in all of its forms is not a question of German or other “sensitivities” for us, but a prerequisite for any emancipatory political action. Despite all the disappointments, we are still attached to Fusion and are reluctant to turn our backs on the project, thereby surrendering the space to non-emancipatory forces. We would like to help shape this space again next year and support it with our work. However, we will only be able to do so if the “Nachschlag”, which is unacceptable to us, is withdrawn and the authoritarian origins of the “Nachschlag” are dealt with.

Where will the journey go if you don’t take the statement down?

A lot depends on your response to our demand. The interest in this matter shows that it is not just a trivial political conflict. For many people, your reaction is very important.

They will make their individual decisions dependent on this.

We wholeheartedly wish for a peaceful Fusion in which dialogues can take place and contradictions can be tolerated without lapsing into antisemitic, racist, anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-Israeli, anti- Palestinian or other ideologically motivated forms of discrimination.”
